Alcatraz - April 13
Page 2
Today, Pat, Peter, Gretchen and I went to Alcatraz. We got down to the Pier area in the late morning. This gave us time for lunch and some sight seeing before boarding the ferry to Alcatraz.
We had lunch at the restaurant at the top of the stairs. It was an ok meal (tourist trap).
The 3 pictures below are of the harbor area. The 3rd picture is of the ferry we took to Alcatraz.
The pictures below were taken on the way to Alcatraz. In the 2nd picture, the Golden Gate Bridge is visible in the distance. In pictures 3 thru 7, you can see Alcatraz getting closer and closer.
The 7 pictures below were taken on Alcatraz. This was a worthwhile tour. I'm glad we did it. We toured the cell block also. The pictures I tried to take inside did not turn out. But we saw the Birdman's cell, Al Capone's cell, and cells of other infamous criminals. Each cell had a cot, a commode, a sink and a shelf. The cells were about 5 feet by 8 feet. Not very large!! The inmates had absolutely no privacy. There were armed guards observing them 24 hours a day. The community showers, the cafeteria, and any other place an inmate could go was under the watchful eyes of armed guards.
The 2 pictures below were taken on our way back to the pier. The San Francisco Bay has a lot of traffic.
The 2 pictures below were taken of the pier area on the way back to the car.
