Orvieto is located in southwestern Umbria. It located on top of a flat summit of a large butte of volcanic tuff. The city rises dramatically above the almost-vertical faces of tuff cliffs that are completed by defensive walls built of the same stone, called tufa. In the Middle Ages, there were Popes would reside in Orvieto in Papal Palaces. In times of war, Orvieto became a place of refuge for the Pope.
