Basilica Cistern and the Byzantine Hippodrome

March, 2015

The Basilica Cistern is the largest of the several hundred cisterns under Istanbul.  It was built during the 6th century.  Today it is kept with little water in it to allow public access and tourism.

The Byzantine Hippodrome was a Roman Stadium for social events and games.  In its heyday, 100,000 people could be accomodated.

The horses below are currently displayed in a museum in Italy.  They were spoils of war in the early 13th century.
